A festival with a Somersetian twist

All over the United Kingdom, and even the world, literally dozens of people go to festivals each year. Some of these are religious, some are to celebrate an aspect of a nation’s culture, and yet others are based around music. The focus of this post will be on a type of festival that celebrates one of the most important parts of Somerset’s culture, that of cider.

Cider apple orchards are not an uncommon sight whilst staying in a holiday park in Somerset, and this is not surprising given how important cider production has been to the county throughout history. There used to be even more cider apple orchards than there are now, and Somerset cider was known up and down England for being some of the best you could get. The fertile fields and warm summer sun made for great crops year after year, and the number of apple varieties that were bred in Somerset, or have been bred from varieties bred in Somerset, arguably made it the capital of cider.

Although the number of orchards has dwindled and cider production in the county isn’t what is used to be, there are plenty of people who are keeping the tradition alive year after year, and if you take a family holiday to Somerset you can join in.

There are a number of cider festivals throughout Somerset that can be attended, all of them giving you the chance to try plenty of different ciders from Somerset and, sometimes, further afield. There are also plenty of events at these festivals to keep people occupied, including performances from local bands.
